The Buddhist Subject Teaching of Buddhist Monks In Buddhist Way School : A Case Study of Ban Nonmuang School Sila Sub-district Muang District, Khonkaen Province 2010

Abstract

This thesis had three main objectives – 1) to study the structural background and problems of the Buddhist Way School at Ban Nonmuang, 2) to study the teaching of the subject Buddhism in this school and 3) to study the results or outcome of teaching the subject Buddhism at this school. This is a qualitative research using the analysis of data, survey and interview. The research findings are as follows.

            The Nonmuang School is one of the Buddhist Way Schools that has integrated the Buddhist principles in various activities so as to improve the quality of youth and students and to help solve problems related to youths such as juvenile crimes and underage sexual relationship problems. This school has emphasized on administering education on a systematic basis laying significance on various aspects such as – it has structural syllabus management, teaching and learning activities, student-centered teaching, teacher evaluation by students, learner proficiency teaching that emphasizes on students critical thinking, IQ and EQ. In addition, instructors are required to prepare well having lesson plans and ability to use teaching tools as for instance while teaching the subject Buddhism they demonstrate using pictures, videos, folders, Buddha images or visits to holy sites to make students understand the lessons well. The instructors teaching the subject Buddhism uphold good moral character at the personal level.

            In this school the teaching of Buddhism involves cultivation of faith in students by three ways – abstinence from all evil actions, doing good and developing a pure mind through personal effort. This school is relatively small with three hundred and seventy-two students and twenty instructors including both lay and monastic teachers. Most students are from the locality and nearby areas. However, the biggest problems facing the community are the increasing divorce rate of parents, students’ addiction to games, and playing truant during class hours. This has led parents and instructors to co-operate and jointly care for the students. Monk-instructors teaching the Buddhism subject are inspiring models in the school imparting knowledge on morality. Monk-instructors ought to have the requisite qualifications consistent with the teaching of the subject Buddhism in order to impart various knowledge and should be exemplary models to students. Regarding the school administration the Nonmuang Buddhist Way School has four divisions – general administration, budget management division, personnel management division and academic division.

The research findings show that the teaching of Buddhism bore results from – instruction, teaching enhancement activities, practice and participation in activities on Buddhist observance days. All the varied activities helped students develop their moral character in accordance with the Buddhist principles that had impact on various aspects --their learning skills improved, good social and peer adjustment, control over emotion and bodily gestures and verbal actions such as abstinence from killing animals, non-confrontation with friends, non-troublesome to guardians and society, having gratefulness to parents, elders and educational institution, humble, jubilant and have loving-kindness towards friends and others, knowing the Thai traditional behavioral patterns, dressing modestly, polite in words, respect seniors and benefactors, responsible and dutiful, punctual and abstain from all temptation and addictions that are detrimental to health and property.
